When we were thinking about leaving our church, that we LOVED, it was a really hard choice. It became easier as time went on because we drug it out for so long. One of the things I didn't want to give up was the Wednesday night AWANA program. One of the things on my listy list for a new church was that they have AWANA; I really appreciated all the Bible memorization that Aayla was learning. Well, now we've found a church. We're planning to become members. They do not have AWANA.
And I realized that's quite okay.
They have Pioneers club that begins for 4-year-olds. There really isn't any Bible memorization to speak of. They go over a verse while they are there, but there isn't anything for them to work on at home.
Why am I depending on the church to make my kid memorize scripture? Memorizing scripture is something that God tells us to do and why; to not sin against God. Ps 119:11 "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Why am I being passive about my kids memorizing scripture? In the roughest seasons of my life it has been the Holy Spirit pulling scripture out of the corners of my mind that has gotten me through.
It is my job as a parent--my job to teach my kids "in the way that they should go." It is my job to show them that memorizing scripture is to be part of every day; it should be an active choice on my part. Ryan memorizing scripture on his own, me memorizing scripture on my own won't make as much of an impact on my kids as doing it WITH them. We took out a good 'ol sheet of 8.5"x11" white paper, drew a grid on it, and put it on the wall. We're on week three of memorizing scripture together as a family. It's really fun seeing the girls' face as they watch Daddy saying the verse that he memorized too. It's really fun seeing the girls watch as Mommy and Daddy get a stamp just like them. Asher gets a condensed version like, "Be kind." "No fits." "Obey." We have plans through six weeks. I think we'll have to celebrate at the end of it with something fun.
My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad indeed; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right. -Proverbs 23:15-16. That is the prayer of my heart for my kids. Discernment comes from having the right wisdom. Wisdom comes from God. Knowing God comes from knowing His Word. Knowing his Word means spending time in and memorizing His Word.
p.s. This post would be WAY more fun to read with pictures. Ordering my phone on Friday (!!) and you may expect some picture posts to return to this thing.
